Across Europe, the construction sector is becoming increasingly strategic for the economic development of individual member states, while evolving technologically and methodologically at different speeds. However, all stakeholders recognise the main problems affecting the construction process: the lack of digital tools for proper communication between designers, contractors and clients, underinvestment in technology and R&D, and poor information management both during and after construction.

Against this background, a new collaboration has begun between the leading Italian company RINA and B1P Group, to develop a methodology that can assess the monetary and non-monetary costs and benefits of using BIM in public construction.

This collaboration between the two companies follows the award of a tender issued by EASME, the European Union's Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. The European Union's aim is precisely to raise awareness of the BIM methodology among all European contracting authorities.

The cost-benefit analysis methodology developed by the two Italian companies RINA and B1P Group will allow European contracting authorities to assess the benefits for their specific projects and make better-informed decisions, including over the long term. The model will be validated by demonstrating its relevance and practical applicability through 6 case studies, representing different types of projects and of building and infrastructure works.

An easy-to-use information handbook will then be produced, which will be published and made available to all European contracting authorities.

So BIM too, with its technology, its process for designing and managing assets and its control of all project information, helps set in motion the recovery of the construction sector in the European Union. With BIM and the cost-benefit model being developed by RINA and B1P Group, the quality of the project is raised, allowing greater detail in all its phases, shorter timescales, smaller margins of error and a significant reduction in costs.
