HBIM for cultural heritage

BIM modelling from survey data and HBIM, to understand, restore and manage the historic building.

At a glance

B1P Group supports the client in BIM modelling from survey data of historic and listed buildings, with the HBIM method: from the laser scanning and photogrammetry point cloud to the Revit model, with families built on the actual elements (vaults, cornices, decorative features, historic structures), catalogue records and decay mapping linked to the objects. The model supports the restoration design, the approval process with the Soprintendenza (the Italian heritage authority) and, after the works, the management of the building.

The sector

What do we do on a historic building?

The survey comes first: laser scanning for interiors and exteriors, photogrammetry for façades and decorative features, registered point cloud and orthophotos, carried out by the appointed surveyor. From there we build the HBIM model with a level of detail negotiated element by element with the restoration designers: not everything at maximum precision, but what is needed to make decisions and to manage the building.

Each element carries its own record (material, period, state of conservation, interventions) and the decay mapping is linked to the objects; the delivered model has two levels, one for the restoration and one for subsequent management.

Typical projects

  • Palaces, churches and monumental complexes
  • Listed buildings in use: offices, schools, museums
  • Archaeological areas and structures
  • Restoration and functional upgrading
  • Cataloguing and heritage management
Rules and formats

Which rules apply to heritage?

The Cultural Heritage Code (Legislative Decree 42/2004) governs works on protected heritage assets and the relationship with the Soprintendenza; public works on cultural heritage are subject to Legislative Decree 36/2023, with its annex on contracts relating to cultural heritage, and to Annex I.9 for information management.

UNI 11337 and ISO 19650 give the process its structure; for exchange, IFC is used with additional properties for historical and conservation data, defined in the plan.

Typical deliverables

What do we deliver?

Deliverables vary with the stage and the appointment; these are the most common.

Why are there no project names here?

Projects in this sector belong to the clients: we do not publish names, locations or images of the assets. In our offers we list projects of the same type and, with the client's consent, someone who can confirm our work.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked in this sector

How much detail does an HBIM model need?

As much as is needed to make decisions: the level is negotiated element by element with the restoration designers; a model built entirely to maximum precision cannot be kept up to date.

Can the model be used for the approval process with the Soprintendenza?

It serves as the documentary basis: the survey, element records and decay mapping are produced from the model in the required drawings.

Do you work on buildings in use?

Yes; the appointed surveyor organises the laser scan survey by room and at agreed times, without interrupting activities, and BIM modelling from the survey data requires no further access to the building.
