BIM for railway stations

Passenger building, canopies, underpasses, forecourt and building services in a federated model, coordinated with the line.

At a glance

B1P Group coordinates and models railway and metro stations: passenger building, canopies, underpasses and footbridges, forecourt, building services and systems, linked to the line alignment. For design consortia we write the BIM execution plan and act as BIM coordinator; for contractors we follow construction through to the as-built model; for infrastructure managers we support the RUP (sole project manager) on the exchange information requirements and on the data for operation.

The sector

What do we do in a station?

A station combines a building and an infrastructure: the architecture, structure and building services of the station building coexist with platforms, canopies, underpasses and forecourt, and everything must sit within the coordinate system of the line. We set up the model structure by discipline and by area, fix the shared reference system and federate the models in Navisworks for coordination.

In consortia with several practices we act as external BIM coordinator: common rules, coordination meetings with the clash register, reports for every interim delivery. On stations in operation, the model is also used to plan the construction phases without interrupting the service. For tram stops, see tramways.

Typical projects

  • New stations and halts
  • Refurbishment of stations in operation
  • Canopies, underpasses and access to platforms
  • Forecourts and interchange hubs
  • Station building services and systems
Rules and formats

What is specific about stations?

The infrastructure manager's information requirements call for separate models for the station building and for the line works, with their own coding and binding interim deliveries; accessibility (routes, platform heights, lifts) and fire safety are checks that the model makes repeatable.

For public stations, Legislative Decree 36/2023 and Annex I.9 apply; for formats, IFC with the version 4.3 entities for the line elements and the building classes for the station building.

What do we deliver?

Deliverables vary with the stage and the information requirements; these are the most common.

Why are there no project names here?

Projects in this sector belong to the clients: we do not publish names, locations or images of the assets. In our offers we list projects of the same type and, with the client's consent, someone who can confirm our work.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked in this sector

Is the station model linked to the line model?

Yes: we set a shared coordinate system from the BIM execution plan onwards, so the station building, platforms and alignment overlap in the federated model without manual transformations.

Do you work on stations in operation?

Yes. The model is used to simulate the construction phases and to check that passenger routes remain safe at every phase; it is one of the most frequent requests from infrastructure managers.

Who acts as BIM coordinator in a design consortium?

We can, as an external party that is neutral towards the practices involved: we write the rules, run the meetings and sign the coordination reports.
