Preparation for UNI 11337-8 certification

Pre-audit, compliance plan, procedures and documents to have the organisation's BIM management system certified to UNI 11337-8, which has replaced UNI/PdR 74.
At a glance

B1P Group prepares practices, engineering firms and contractors for certification of their BIM management system to UNI 11337-8, the standard that has replaced UNI/PdR 74: it starts from a pre-audit on real projects, writes the compliance plan, the procedures and the system documents together with the organisation, and supports it through to the certification body's audit. B1P Group does not certify: it prepares.

Definition

What is UNI 11337-8 certification?

UNI 11337-8 is the Italian standard on the requirements for an organisation's BIM management system: how those who design, build or operate assets organise the processes, roles, tools and controls of digital information management. It has replaced UNI/PdR 74, the reference practice against which BIM management systems were certified until now.

Certification is issued by an accredited certification body, after an audit of the documents and of sample projects. Project processes remain those of ISO 19650 and the UNI 11337 series: the management system shows that the organisation applies and controls them. The pre-audit makes sure you do not reach the audit with procedures that are written but not applied.

Deliverables
Pre-audit report with the non-conformities, compliance plan, BIM management system manual and procedures, document templates (pre-appointment and post-appointment BIM execution plans, registers), support during the audit
Standards
UNI 11337-8 (formerly UNI/PdR 74) for the BIM management system; ISO 19650-1, 2, 3 and 5 and UNI 11337-5, 6 and 7 for project processes; integration with ISO 9001 where it is in place
Tools
Checklists for each part of the standard, the organisation's CDE, B1P Group document templates; accredited certification bodies chosen by the organisation

How does the pre-audit work?

Through interviews with the managers responsible, a review of the project documents (requirements received, pre-appointment and post-appointment plans produced, internal procedures) and a check of two or three real projects against the requirements of UNI 11337-8 and of the process standards: appointments, plans, common data environment, checks, deliverables. The result is a report listing the non-conformities, split between those that block certification and those to be improved.

The pre-audit usually takes a few working days spread over two or three weeks; the resulting compliance plan sets deadlines and owners.

What needs to be put in order before certification?

Almost always three things: the written procedures (how to read a set of requirements, how to write a plan, how to check a model, how to archive), the common data environment with states and permissions, and the records that show the procedures are applied (appointments, coordination reports, checking minutes). Staff competences must be documented, with reference to UNI 11337-7.

B1P Group writes the manual and the procedures with the organisation, not in its place: a system imposed from above does not pass the audit and does not get used.

What happens at the audit?

The certification body, chosen by the organisation and independent of whoever prepared it, checks documents and sample projects and issues the certificate if the non-conformities have been closed. B1P Group supports the organisation during the audit and in closing out the findings. For individuals, certification of the UNI 11337-7 roles (BIM manager, coordinator, specialist, CDE manager) is a separate path: we provide the training, the exam is taken at How Strategy Solution, our partner assessment body (OdV), and the certificate is issued by IQUA.

After certification the system has to be maintained: internal audits, an annual review, updating the procedures when standards and tools change. We build this into the plan, with a schedule.

How long does the process take?

The typical stages for an organisation that already works in BIM; timings depend on the number of projects and on the existing procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about UNI 11337-8

Does B1P Group issue the certification?

No. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body; B1P Group prepares the organisation and supports it during the audit. Keeping those who prepare separate from those who certify is a safeguard for the organisation.

What is the difference between UNI/PdR 74 and UNI 11337-8?

UNI/PdR 74 was the reference practice (prassi di riferimento) on the requirements for a BIM management system; UNI 11337-8 has replaced it as a standard. Organisations already certified to the reference practice agree the transition with their certification body; in the pre-audit we look at what changes in the procedures.

And ISO 19650?

ISO 19650 describes the information processes of projects, UNI 11337-8 the system through which the organisation governs them. In the pre-audit we check them together, because the sample projects in the audit are managed according to those standards.

Do you need ISO 9001 first?

It is not mandatory, but it helps: an organisation that already has a quality system has procedures, records and internal audits on which information management can be built. Without ISO 9001 the process is possible, just a little longer.

Is it also suitable for a small organisation?

Yes, provided it delivers BIM projects on a regular basis: the system is scaled to the organisation, with few procedures and a simple CDE. For those who only do a BIM project now and then, project-by-project BIM management without certification is the better option.

Do you need to certify your BIM management system?

Start with the pre-audit: in three weeks you will know what is missing and how long it will take.
