BIM modelling with Civil 3D for infrastructure

Alignments, corridors, surfaces and quantities for linear infrastructure, integrated with the Revit models of the structures and delivered in IFC.
At a glance

B1P Group models linear infrastructure in Autodesk Civil 3D: terrain surfaces from survey data, horizontal and vertical alignments, road and rail corridors, typical cross-sections, underground utilities and cut and fill quantities, integrated with the Revit models of bridges, tunnels and stations and delivered in IFC to the information requirements. Railways, roads and airports are among our main sectors.

Definition

What is BIM for infrastructure with Civil 3D?

Civil 3D is Autodesk's software for designing linear infrastructure: the terrain is a surface, the alignment a horizontal and vertical object, the road or railway a corridor generated from typical cross-sections applied along the alignment. Every change to the alignment updates the corridor, sections and quantities.

Infrastructure BIM comes from combining these objects with the models of the structures (bridges, tunnels, stations, walls) built in Revit, in a single georeferenced federated model from which quantities, profiles and IFC deliverables for the client are extracted.

Deliverables
Terrain surfaces, alignments and profiles, corridors and typical cross-sections, models of networks and underground utilities, cut and fill quantities, federated model with the structures, IFC (including IFC 4.3 for infrastructure)
Standards
UNI 11337, ISO 19650, information requirements of rail and road network operators, IFC 4.3 (ISO 16739-1:2024) for roads and railways
Tools
Autodesk Civil 3D, Revit for structures, Navisworks and Autodesk Forma for federation, in-house automation for families repeated along the alignment
Modelling with Civil 3D

Which assets do we model in Civil 3D?

Roads and motorways, railway and metro lines, paved areas and airport infrastructure, hydraulic works, networks and underground utilities. On railway projects the work also covers electric traction and lineside systems, with parametric families placed along the alignment through automation.

Structures (viaducts, tunnels, stations, technical buildings) are modelled in Revit and placed in the alignment's reference system, so the federated model stays consistent from kilometre zero to the end of the line. To train your team on Civil 3D there is the Civil 3D course.

How do you get reliable quantities and sections?

From the corridor: the typical cross-sections carry the material and surface codes, and cut, fill and pavement quantities are calculated between surfaces, not by hand. When the alignment changes, the quantities update and design changes can be quantified in hours, not weeks.

Model-based quantities do need to be set up carefully, though: codes consistent with the bill of quantities, stated tolerance bands, comparison with traditional take-offs on the first deliveries. It is part of the service, not an option.

How does Civil 3D integrate with Revit and IFC?

Through a shared coordinate system set in the BIM execution plan, common reference points and rules for exchange: terrain and alignment go from Civil 3D to Revit for the structures, and the structures go from Revit into the federated model. The IFC export follows the IFC 4.3 classes, designed for roads and railways, when the client requires them.

Checking the federated model confirms that the structures sit where the alignment says and that quantities are consistent across disciplines.

Deliverables

What does a Civil 3D delivery contain?

The typical deliverables of an infrastructure project, from the technical and economic feasibility design to the as-built model.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Civil 3D

Is Civil 3D enough for a railway project?

For the alignment, corridor, terrain and quantities, yes; electric traction, systems and structures are modelled in Revit, with families placed along the alignment, and everything is federated. This is how we work on railway and metro lines.

Do you deliver in IFC 4.3?

Yes, when the information requirements call for it: IFC 4.3 contains classes for roads, railways and linear infrastructure that earlier versions did not have. We check the export in a third-party viewer and document the mapping.

Do you also provide Civil 3D training?

Yes: for third parties, in-house and in classes for individuals, for road and railway designers: surfaces, alignments, corridors, sections and quantities, with exercises on real projects.

What do you need to get started?

The survey or terrain model, the design alignment if there is one, the typical cross-sections and the information requirements. If there is no survey, it must be commissioned from a surveyor; on the point cloud we support the client in BIM modelling from survey data.
