Civil 3D course

Surfaces, alignments, corridors, sections and quantities for road and railway designers, with exercises on real projects: in-company, in the classroom or online, also under the training provider's brand.
At a glance

B1P Group's Civil 3D course teaches you to design linear infrastructure in BIM: ground surfaces from survey data, horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections and road and rail corridors, networks and underground utilities, cut and fill quantities, integration with Revit and delivery in IFC. For companies, training providers and professional bodies, with trainers who model infrastructure on B1P Group's projects.

Definition

What does the Civil 3D course include?

Two levels. The basic level takes you from survey to corridor: importing point clouds and survey data, surfaces, alignments and profiles, typical sections, corridor, cross-sections and basic quantities. The advanced level works on real assets: custom subassemblies, intersections and roundabouts, drainage networks and underground utilities, quantities by phase, exchange with Revit for engineering structures, delivery in IFC 4.3 and checking of the federated model.

The exercises use anonymised road and rail alignments taken from B1P Group's projects, with network operators' real exchange information requirements as the reference for deliverables.

Duration and format
Basic 16 to 24 hours, advanced 16 to 24 hours; half-day or full-day modules; in the classroom at the client's premises, live online or in-company on the client's projects; groups of up to eight
Who it is for
Engineers and technical staff at infrastructure design firms, contractors and network operators; company teams adopting BIM for linear infrastructure; members of professional bodies through the training provider's agreements
Attendance certificate and requirements
Certificate of attendance under the training provider's brand or B1P Group's; CPD credits through the organising professional body; computer with Civil 3D installed, version agreed in advance; a basic knowledge of AutoCAD is useful

What is the programme?

Basic: drawing and coordinate system setup, importing survey data and point clouds, surfaces and analysis, alignments to geometric design standards, longitudinal profiles, typical sections, corridor, cross-sections, earthworks quantities, sheets. Advanced: custom subassemblies, intersections, drainage networks and underground utilities, quantities by phase and by lot, data shortcuts and teamwork, exchange with Revit and Navisworks, IFC 4.3 export, checks before handover.

For network operators and contracting authorities there is a module on reading Civil 3D and IFC models, designed for those who need to check models rather than build them.

Civil 3D course

Who teaches the course?

B1P Group professionals who model railway lines, metros, roads and yards on live projects: they bring to class real alignments, real information requirements and the errors that come up in checking, from the wrong surface to quantities that do not match the bill of quantities.

In Italy there are fewer Civil 3D trainers than Revit trainers, and much training sticks to the manual; this course is built on the way we work on projects, with the rules that get the deliverable accepted by the network operator.

Civil 3D course

Which projects do you practise on?

On a road section with an intersection for the basic level and on a railway section with engineering structures for the advanced level, both anonymised, with survey, typical sections and information requirements. In-company, the work is done on the client's projects, to its standards, so the course produces a usable model.

The materials (handouts, exercise files, subassemblies) remain with the participants under a licence; the training provider receives a licence for later editions.

How does it work for individuals, companies and institutions?

For individuals we run classes under the B1P Group name, from basic to advanced level; dates, format and fee are agreed on request. For companies, the corporate Civil 3D course is held in-house or online, on the client's projects and to its standards.

For Civil 3D training run by training providers and professional bodies, the training-for-third-parties model applies: the organisation chooses the modules, sets the timetable and price, and offers the course under its own name; B1P Group provides the programme, trainers, materials, registers and certificates of attendance, plus the documentation for CPD credits and funded training. Companies take it on their own premises or online, on their own projects, also as part of a BIM implementation programme.

If you would rather not train an in-house team, Civil 3D modelling remains available as a service.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the Civil 3D course

Do I need to know AutoCAD?

It helps, because Civil 3D runs in the AutoCAD environment; those who do not know it take the basic level with an extra introductory module of a few hours.

Does the course cover railways as well as roads?

Yes: typical sections and rail corridors, railway electrification modelled in Revit along the alignment and IFC 4.3 export are covered at the advanced level.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live, with shared files and correction of the exercises; for the advanced level we recommend at least one day in person on the client's projects.

Do you award CPD credits?

They are awarded by the professional body that organises the course; B1P Group provides the programme, trainers and documentation for accreditation.

Can I enrol as an individual?

Yes. We also run classes under the B1P Group name for individual professionals: tell us your starting level and whether you work on roads or railways, and we will let you know dates, format and fee.
