pyRevit course

Automating Revit with pyRevit and Python: from scripts for repetitive tasks to tools rolled out to the whole team, taught by the people who develop them for our projects.
At a glance

B1P Group's pyRevit course teaches you to automate Revit with pyRevit, the open-source environment that runs Python scripts inside Revit: filling in and checking parameters, creating views and sheets, repetitive checks, small tools with an interface, rolled out to the team as an extension. The trainers develop the pyRevit tools that B1P Group uses on its projects.

Definition

What does the pyRevit course include?

Two levels. The basic level takes Revit users to writing their first scripts: installing pyRevit and the structure of an extension, Python fundamentals, reading model elements, filters, parameters and transactions. The advanced level builds real tools: interfaces with windows and options, views and sheets in batches, model checks with a report, exports, error handling and roll-out to the team from a shared repository.

The work is based on tasks taken from our projects: each participant leaves with working tools they can use the next day.

Formats
Classes for individuals, in-company courses on the client's models, modules under the brand of training providers and software vendors; in the classroom or live online
Who it is for
BIM specialists and coordinators, technical staff at design firms and contractors who use Revit every day; no programming experience is needed for the basic level
Requirements
Computer with Revit and pyRevit installed (pyRevit is free and open source); modelling-level knowledge of Revit

What is the programme?

Basic: installing and configuring pyRevit, structure of an extension and its buttons, essential Python (variables, lists, loops, functions), the Revit API: document, elements, categories, filters, parameters, transactions; first scripts to fill in and check parameters. Advanced: interfaces with pyRevit forms, creating views, sheets and schedules in batches, model checks with an exported report, reading and writing CSV and Excel files, error handling, scripts for multiple Revit versions.

The last module covers roll-out: the tools become a team extension, updated from a shared repository, with naming rules and minimal documentation.

Who teaches the course?

The people at B1P Group who develop the pyRevit tools used on our projects: filling in parameters, batch sheets, checks against the exchange information requirements, property sets for IFC. The course grew out of those tools: we teach what works on real models.

Automation with artificial intelligence has a separate course, the AI in BIM course; the two can be combined.

pyRevit course

What happens in class?

Each participant brings a repetitive task from their own work in Revit and turns it into a script, then into a button with an interface. In-company, the exercises are the tools the team needs, on the client's models and templates.

The scripts written in class stay with the participants; the teaching materials are provided under a licence.

How does it work for individuals, companies and institutions?

For individuals we run classes under the B1P Group name; dates, format and fee are agreed on request. For companies the pyRevit course is held in-house, on the team's models and tasks, and can end with the company's first extension.

For training providers, software vendors and resellers, the training-for-third-parties model applies: the organisation offers the course under its own name; B1P Group provides the programme, trainers, materials, registers and certificates of attendance. The full overview is on the BIM training page.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the pyRevit course

Do I need to know how to program?

Not for the basic level: you learn the Python you need during the course, starting from Revit tasks. For the advanced level you need the basics covered in the basic level or equivalent experience.

Is pyRevit free?

Yes, it is an open-source project and is free to install; you need a Revit licence.

Do the scripts work on all versions of Revit?

pyRevit supports recent versions of Revit; the course shows how to write scripts that work across several versions and how to test them before rolling them out to the team.

Can I enrol as an individual?

Yes. We also run classes under the B1P Group name for individual professionals: tell us what you do in Revit and what you would like to automate, and we will let you know dates, format and fee.
