BIM for airports

Terminals, airside infrastructure and the operation of the airport, in a model that remains useful after construction.

At a glance

B1P Group works at airports on terminals and buildings, aprons and airside infrastructure, building services and special systems, with construction that has to coexist with airport operations. For airport operators we support the RUP (sole project manager) in drafting the exchange information requirements and set up the data for operation; for designers and contractors we model and coordinate.

The sector

What do we do at an airport?

An airport is a complex building inside an infrastructure in operation. In the terminal we coordinate architecture, structure, building services and special systems (baggage handling, security screening, passenger information) in the federated model; on aprons and airside infrastructure we work in Civil 3D on pavements, drainage and airfield ground lighting.

The value for the operator comes after construction: from the information requirements onwards we set up the component data needed for maintenance, and we train the technical staff who check the as-built model before it enters the common data environment.

Typical projects

  • New terminals and extensions
  • Aprons, runways and taxiways
  • Technical buildings and hangars
  • Airport building services and special systems
  • Construction while in operation
Rules and formats

Which rules apply at airports?

Airside infrastructure follows the ENAC (Italian Civil Aviation Authority) regulation for the construction and operation of aerodromes and EASA rules; airport operators are contracting authorities and apply Legislative Decree 36/2023 with Annex I.9. The exchange information requirements must ask for model uses limited to those useful for operation: it is the first thing we write.

Exchange takes place in IFC: for aprons, the version 4.3 entities for alignment and pavements; for the terminal, the building classes.

Typical deliverables

What do we deliver?

Deliverables vary with the stage and the information requirements; these are the most common.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked in this sector

Do you write the exchange information requirements for an airport operator?

We support the operator in drafting them, with model uses limited to those useful to the operator, written checking rules and updates to the requirements between design and construction.

Do you support construction at airports in operation?

Yes. The construction phases go into the model and are checked against routes, sterile areas and operations; it is the part the operator checks most closely.

Is the model useful for maintenance?

It is, if the component data was requested in the information requirements and checked in the as-built model: we set it up this way from the start.
