BIM for hospitals

Operating theatres, wards and healthcare services coordinated in the model, even when the hospital stays open during the works.

At a glance

B1P Group works on hospitals and healthcare facilities with coordinated architecture, structure and building services models: operating theatres, wards, medical gases, electrical and special systems. For health authorities we assist the RUP (sole project manager) with the exchange information requirements and train the technical staff; for designers and contractors we model, coordinate and derive quantities, interim valuations and as-built models for maintenance.

The sector

What do we do in a hospital?

A hospital is the building with the most building services per square metre: controlled-contamination ventilation, medical gases, electrical installations in medical locations, data networks, nurse call and security. We model architecture, structure and building services in Revit and coordinate them in the federated model: ceiling voids, service risers, penetrations and plant rooms are resolved before construction.

Much of the work is done with the hospital open. The construction phases go into the model and are checked against patient and staff routes, the departments that must stay in operation and the building services shutdowns; at the end of the works the as-built model records the installed components with the data needed for maintenance.

Typical projects

  • New hospitals and extensions
  • Operating theatres and intensive care units
  • Community health centres and community hospitals
  • Refurbishment of hospital blocks in operation
  • Energy centres and medical gas networks
Rules and formats

Which rules apply to healthcare facilities?

They remain those of the design: the minimum structural and technological requirements of the Presidential Decree of 14 January 1997 and the regional requirements for accreditation, the fire prevention technical rule for healthcare facilities, CEI 64-8 for medical locations, UNI EN ISO 7396-1 for medical gases and UNI 11425 for operating theatre ventilation. The model does not replace them: it makes them checkable, room by room.

Health authorities are contracting authorities and apply Legislative Decree 36/2023 with Annex I.9. Exchange takes place in IFC and, for operational data, in COBie or in the format of the health authority's maintenance management system.

Typical deliverables

What do we deliver?

Deliverables vary with the stage and the information requirements; these are the most common.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked in this sector

Do you work in hospitals that remain in operation?

Yes. The phases go into the model with the departments that stay open, the routes and the building services shutdowns; it is the part the health authority checks most closely.

Do you model medical gases and operating theatre ventilation?

Yes, to construction level and coordinated with structure and ceilings; the model carries the data needed for commissioning, validation and maintenance.

Do you assist the health authority with the exchange information requirements?

Yes: we support the RUP in drafting them, with model uses linked to operation (room register, building services, equipment and maintenance). Checks on deliveries remain with the health authority; we provide training for its technical staff.

Do you have a hospital at the design stage or to renovate?

Tell us about the project, the stage and what must stay in operation: we will tell you how we would set up the model and what we would deliver.
