BIM for roads and motorways

Road modelling in Civil 3D, construction phases and quantity take-off on the model.

At a glance

B1P Group models road and motorway infrastructure: alignment, corridor and typical cross-sections in Civil 3D, structures, safety barriers, drainage and systems in Revit, federated model for coordination. From the model we derive earthworks and quantities by section, simulate the construction phases and produce the as-built model; for road operators we support the RUP (sole project manager) on the exchange information requirements and set up the data for operation.

The sector

What do we do on a road?

The Civil 3D corridor is the centre of the model: from the alignment and the typical cross-sections we derive the road platform, slopes, ditches and earthworks, and every change to the alignment updates cross-sections and quantities. Structures, safety barriers, drainage and systems go into Revit and are coordinated with the corridor in the federated model.

For contractors we link the model to the bill of quantities and the programme: quantities by section and by interim valuation, simulation of the phases and of site traffic on upgrades carried out under traffic. To train your team on Civil 3D, there is the Civil 3D course.

Typical projects

  • New roads and bypasses
  • Motorway upgrades and widening
  • Interchanges and junctions
  • Hydraulic and drainage works
  • Safety barriers, signage and systems
Rules and formats

Which rules apply to roads?

The functional and geometric standards for road construction (Ministerial Decree of 5 November 2001) and for junctions (Ministerial Decree of 19 April 2006) remain the basis of the design; road and motorway operators have their own exchange information requirements, with model structure, coding and checks.

For public contracts, Legislative Decree 36/2023 and Annex I.9 apply; exchange takes place in IFC 4.3, which introduced road entities, alignment and linear placement.

Typical deliverables

What do we deliver?

Deliverables vary with the stage and the information requirements; these are the most common.

Why are there no project names here?

Projects in this sector belong to the clients: we do not publish names, locations or images of the assets. In our offers we list projects of the same type and, with the client's consent, someone who can confirm our work.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked in this sector

Do you derive cut and fill quantities from the model?

Yes: the Civil 3D corridor gives earthworks by section and by phase, and the other quantities come from the model objects linked to the bill of quantities items.

Do you work on upgrades to roads that stay open to traffic?

Yes. Simulating the phases and the temporary traffic management is the most requested part: the model shows every construction phase and how it interacts with traffic.

Do you check a designer's deliveries on behalf of the road operator?

No: checking deliveries remains with the road operator or the contracting authority. We support them in drafting the information requirements and the checking rules and train the people who carry out the checks; to designers we offer model checking before handover.
